About the role
The Manager – Accounts & Taxation is a strategic leadership role responsible for owning the accounting and taxation function end-to-end, ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and high-quality client delivery. This role goes beyond execution and requires independent judgment, technical authority, people leadership, and client advisory capability, particularly for Australian engagements.
Strategic ownership & accountability
- Own and drive end-to-end accounting and taxation deliverables, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely closure across all engagements.
- Act as a final-level reviewer and sign-off authority for complex accounting and tax matters.
- Take full responsibility for quality, risk mitigation, and regulatory adherence across portfolios.
Advanced accounting & financial leadership
- Lead preparation and review of financial statements, management reports, and statutory accounts for companies, partnerships, trusts, individuals, and super funds.
- Oversee BAS, GST, CGT, FBT, and Division 7A compliance, ensuring best-practice application of Australian tax laws.
- Ensure continuous enhancement of workpapers, reporting quality, and documentation standards year-on-year.
High-value tax & business advisory
- Independently analyse complex tax scenarios, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend commercially sound tax strategies.
- Provide business advisory services including cash flow forecasting, budgeting, management accounting, board packs, and succession planning.
- Research tax laws and regulations in depth, form technical positions, and confidently defend them with clients and stakeholders.
Leadership & capability development
- Lead, mentor, and groom high-performing accounting and tax teams, creating strong second-line leaders.
- Review work at a strategic and technical level, not just transactional accuracy.
- Drive skill development, technical upskilling, and performance improvement across junior and mid-level resources.
- Act as a coach, escalation point, and decision-maker for complex team and client matters.
Client & stakeholder management
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, managing relationships with confidence and professionalism.
- Handle complex client discussions independently, providing clarity on accounting and tax positions.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve delivery models, turnaround times, and client satisfaction.
Qualifications & experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (mandatory).
- CA / CPA / CMA qualification (strongly preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and taxation, with substantial exposure to Australian clients.
- Proven track record of leading teams, managing deliverables, and owning client portfolios.
- Strong command over Australian taxation laws and accounting standards.
- Experience with Xero and Xero Practice tools is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
